THE UTAH HALF
Saturday, August 25, 2012, 7:00 am
The Flatest & Fastest Half in the West!

This event is capped at 500 athletes and expected to sell out! Utah County, Provo City, and Utah State Park are pleased to present the six annual UTAH HALF… a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run triathlon. If you are a seasoned triathlete, put this into your schedule and experience an amazing event. Or if you are looking to jump up from sprint and olympic distances, this is your graduation present. With the help of great sponsors, we are focused on keeping the entry fees low while still creating a high quality experience. The long course triathlon requires more training and intensity but as many will attest, the satisfaction of completing one is also increased. Are you ready to go long course?

HOTEL

The Provo Marriott will be holding a certain number of rooms for Utah Half Athletes for race weekend. Click on one of the links below and it will take you to their home page where rate code has already been entered in the appropriate field and you can quickly make your room reservation.
CLICK HERE or on the Marriott Logo —->

Reservations by attendees must be received on or before Thursday, August 9, 2012, (the “Cut-Off Date”).  At the Cut-Off Date, Hotel will review the reservation pick up for the Event, release the unreserved rooms for general sale, and determine whether or not it can accept reservations based on a space- and rate-available basis at the Utah Half Triathlon group rate after this date.

“Woah, the Utah Half seriously kicked my trash. What a cool race… everything was awesome and when I hit that finish line I was so stoked. All I wanted was to get my medal and lay in the grass. Oh and eat like 5 slices of pizza.”
— Tyson Apostol, Heber Utah (CBS’s Survivor Contestant)

Swim 1.2 miles

The Utah Half swim takes place in the sheltered harbor of Utah Lake State Park. Swimmers will leave in a wave format based on your race division (see above). You will enter the water from the western boat ramp and swim an L shaped counter clockwise loop marked with orange buoys. While swimming you will keep all swim buoys to your left. Wetsuits are suggested but not mandatory. We will start promptly at 6:45 to avoid the morning sun in your eyes. See the course maps for exact details.

BIKE 56 Miles Updated Interactive Bike Map  - Total Elevation gain 417′

The bike course is a flat 56-mile out-and-back that heads out to West Mountain. While in Provo City there will be open traffic and police blockades. Once outside the city the roads will be heavily marked but open to traffic. So use caution and yield to things that are bigger and faster than you! There will be a total of 12 police officers and county sheriffs on course… just follow their instructions as you approach. There are a few cattle guards that will be heavily marked and covered, but be careful going over them. We will have 3 aid stations on course. They are located at the following locations:
AID 1- mile 15: Gels, Bottles (water, HEED)
AID 2- mile 28 Turnaround: Special Needs Bags
AID 3- mile 41: Gels, Bottles (water, HEED)

We are providing the option of special needs bags at the bike turnaround. When you check in Friday night we will provide you with an empty bag. It is then your responsibility write your number on it, place inside it nutrition you might want at the bike turnaround, and then deliver it to us race morning. Bike support will be roaming the streets to help with bike malfunctions.

RUN 13.1 Miles Updated Interactive Run Map - Total Elvation gain 104′

The Utah Half run course is improved from our previous years and now includes more shade trees, more aid stations, and a more spectator friendly 2 loop course along the asphault trail along the Provo River. There will be an aid station every mile. You will follow the trails and loop back to 3110 west. This road will bring you back towards center street in Provo. From here you will pick up on the provo river trail and run a loop following the river. After the turn head back to Utah Lake State Park for lap 2, when the second lap is completed head for the finish line where a party awaits! The run is flat as a pancake with virtually no elevation gain so enjoy your half marathon run PR!

Swim Caps

Swim caps will be provided in your race packet. The issued cap must be worn during the swim.

TRANSITION AREA

Only athletes are allowed in the transition areas, please instruct family members and friends to stay outside of the transition area. The transition area will close at 6:50AM. All athletes will need to exit before that time. If you are inside the transition area after that time there is no guarantee that your timing chip will record accurate splits for your race. Please plan accordingly and be out of the transition areas. Thank you :)

Results will be posted on Saturday within 8 hours of the final participant crossing the finish line. A link to the RESULTS will be posted on this webpage. Instructions for chip use will be provided at packet pick-up. A lost or misplaced timing chip will result in a $20 fee.
