Break the ice with us at this year’s Icebreaker! Located at the American Fork Fitness Center, the Icebreaker is an un-official beginning to the new Tri season in Utah. This race also features a children’s course after the main event. So bring your kids and watch them ROCK their very own triathlon!

Race Overview

The Icebreaker begins at 10AM inside the Fitness Center’s indoor pool. The transition area (TA) opens at 8AM and is just outside the Fitness Center. The remainder of the race loops just a few blocks from the TA around the cemetery and surrounding neighborhoods.

*Relay Teams: As you prepare for the race, remember that each team is issued only one timing chip, swim cap, and bib number.

This schedule is subject to change. The final race day schedule and any modifications will be included in an email sent out to athletes approximately one week before the race and during the pre-race briefing.

Swim

300 Meter Sprint / 100 Meter Child

Relay Teams: The swimmer will transfer their timing chip to the biker inside the TA once they’ve finished.

Child Racers: The children’s swim doesn’t start until after the main event.

Wetsuits are not required for the Icebreaker. During body-marking, athlete’s hands will be marked with numbers 0-5 based on the following split times (minutes):

  • 0 = 5:00
  • 1 = 5:00 – 5:30
  • 2 = 5:30 – 6:00
  • 3 = 6:00 – 6:30
  • 4 = 6:30 – 7:30
  • 5 = 7:30 and over

Athletes will line up according to their swim numbers and begin at 5-second intervals to avoid congestion in the pool. Enter the pool feet first – no diving. Athletes will swim under lane lines after each length of the pool in a serpentine fashion. You must wear the swim cap issued to you during the swim. Personal caps are not allowed.

Transition Area/Finish Line:
The TA will open at 8:00 am and position will be on a first come first serve basis.

Bike

12 Mile Sprint / 3.1 MIle Child

Sprint Racers: You will complete two loops of the bike course.

Relay Teams: The biker will need to wait inside the TA to receive the timing chip from the swimmer.

Child Racers: The run course doubles as the child bike course.

Athletes will exit the swim and make their way to the TA. Helmets must be on and fastened before mounting your bike. Riding bikes inside the TA is not allowed. The bike course starts with an uphill, so make sure to pace yourself as you start.

Be cautious, yield to traffic, and obey all officers. Ride to the right and pass on the left. Make sure to slow down and be prepared to dismount at the dismount line.

*There are no aid stations during the bike course, please plan accordingly.

Run

3.1 Mile Sprint / 1 Mile Child

Sprint Racers: The run course travels the same course as the bike, but is shortened to a 5k.

Child Racers: The run course travels only around the American Fork Cemetery.

Relay Teams: The runner will need to be waiting inside the TA to receive the timing chip from the biker.

The course has some hills, but nothing too serious.

*There is one aid station approximately halfway through the run course.

Kids’ Run: The run course is approximately 1 mile.

Finish

Hydration and goodies will be available for athletes at the finish line. To request favorites, please email info@racetri.com. Race results will be posted to the website on Saturday.

Packet Pickup

Early packet pick up details TBA. If race morning, pick up will start at 8 AM

You must have your photo ID and USAT card (if applicable) to pick up your packet. This is a USAT requirement. A friend or family member cannot pick up your packet for you – there are no exceptions to this rule.

Age Groups

The USAT categories are based on what age you will be by December 31st of this year. (If you will be 45 December 31st, you will be in the 45-49 age group on race day. The official USAT age groups are as follows:

Fitness Center Bathrooms

In the past, the Fitness Center has had problems with too many people using the bathroom facilities and causing low water pressure. To alleviate this problem, we will have portable toilets available. We encourage athletes to use these.

Additional Information

Parking: Parking will not be available at the Fitness Center. We ask that arriving athletes and spectators please use the side streets and lower parking lots to the west of the Fitness Center for parking.

Spectators: Please remember that spectators are not allowed in the transition area during any part of the race. We look forward to see you with your cameras, smiling faces, and positive attitudes as you cheer on your athletes!
